Ponderin' The Past...With The Amish, part 2 - Religion

Hey y'all! Katy is still out of town so I'll be posting for her again today. :-)
Today I am posting the 2nd part of the Amish series I'm doing - Amish Religion.

The Amish very strongly believe in the separation of the people of God and the people of the world, using Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. - and II Corinthians 6:17 - Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord." -  in support of this belief.
They separate themselves from the world to avoid the temptations of sin, and rely on themselves and their community instead.

Amish church meets every other Sunday in one of the homes of the families within the community. In church,  the men and women sit on opposite sides of the church on backless benches. Hymns are sung from the Ausbund - the Amish hymnal. One of the preachers or bishop will preach the two sermons for that day, and the service will last for up to 3 hours. Afterwards, the community has a light meal together.

In the Amish community, baptism is an entrance into the Church family. Baptism usually takes place at around the age of 18. After you turn 16, you enter what is called Rumspringe - Running Around Years. This is a time for Amish youth to get a glimpse at the world around them without getting shunned from the church. A shunning is what takes place if you leave the Amish Church for the world or commit a major sin against your community, family, or church and refuse to repent. Once shunned, you are unable to visit your family or anyone within the community. The community is also forbidden to communicate with you. You are shunned until you confess your errors before the Brethren(Church leaders) and repent before the congregation. If you leave the community before your baptism, the Shunning does not apply. You will be frowned upon and very possibly shunned privately by your own family, but not by the Church.

Well there you go! Tune in next time for part 3 - Amish Lifestyle! Feel free to comment if you have any questions! :-)
