In the well-known song, 12 Days of Christmas, we are looking at each verse and explaining what each item named represents! So for today, we are looking at the ninth verse…
On the ninth day of Christmas,
My true love sent to me
NINE LADIES DANCING,Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
NINE LADIES DANCING,Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtledoves,
And a partridge in a pear tree
As we have already discussed, we are the ones singing it, telling what our true love – God – gave to us. The partridge in a pear tree represented Christ, the two turtledoves represented the Old and New Testaments, the three French hens represent the theological virtues, and the four calling birds symbolize the four gospels, and the five golden rings are the first five books in the Old Testament (the histories), the six geese a-laying are the 6 days of creation, the seven swans a-swimming are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the eight maids a-milking are the Beatitudes!
The nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit – Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control, found in Galatians 5.
